TruGro® expanded shale is a lightweight aggregate produced from raw shale.
When fired in a rotary kiln at temperatures exceeding 2000° Fahrenheit and then rapidly cooled, the raw shale is transformed into a ceramic aggregate that is porous, lightweight, chemically inert, and durable. TruGro is valued by growers and landscapers alike because it is a permanent material that helps improve drainage, oxygen exchange and microbial activity. It’s roughly the size of pea gravel but half the weight and its porous composition has the ability to retain water and nutrients for use at the root zone.
TruGro has many applications around the home. It is great for amending the clay soils in your landscape and garden beds, and is helpful in reducing the weight and settling of large container soils. TruGro can also be used at higher ratios for those plants requiring better drainage such as orchids, agaves and cacti. Compacted areas beneath trees can be improved by radial trenching or vertical mulching techniques using a mix of TruGro and compost. TruGro is also purchased for hydroponic, aquaponic and bonsai growing media.
TruGro is bagged and distributed by several companies to garden centers and nurseries under various brand names. TruGro is light gray in color and approximately ¼” in size.
